Is Thailand Really More Expensive?

Not everywhere. Thailand is dearer than France, Japan and the US, but cheaper than Hong Kong and Singapore in all 3 sizes. Singapore is THB 2,060 more for the Cabin and THB 3,200 more for the Trunk Plus.

The gap between Thailand and Japan is only about 1.5%, and between Thailand and the US no more than 1.1%, in every size.

France Is Cheapest, by How Much?

France is about 14% cheaper than Thailand across all 3 sizes, and the baht gap widens as the case gets bigger:

Size Thailand France Saving vs Thailand
Cabin THB 52,400 THB 45,130 THB 7,270
Check-In L THB 65,700 THB 56,400 THB 9,300
Trunk Plus THB 85,300 THB 73,330 THB 11,970

What Is Left After a Tourist Tax Refund?

Prices in France, Japan and Singapore already include tax, and visitors can claim it back. With a full refund before operator fees, the Cabin comes down to:

Country Tax in the price Maximum refund Net price
France 20% VAT THB 7,522 THB 37,608
Japan 10% consumption tax THB 4,698 THB 46,982
Singapore 9% GST THB 4,497 THB 49,963
Hong Kong No sales tax — THB 53,000
Thailand 7% VAT Not refundable to Thai residents THB 52,400

Calculated by the Luxe Addict team from the share of tax inside each price. Real refunds are lower because refund operators deduct a fee

How Did Japan's Tax Refund Change on 1 November 2026?

From 1 November 2026, visitors pay the full tax-inclusive price in the store and claim the refund when leaving Japan, completing the departure step at a customs terminal or through Visit Japan Web before check-in.

The minimum is still JPY 5,000 per store per day, and everything bought together must be with you at departure, or the whole receipt loses its refund.

What Are the Minimums in France and Singapore?

France requires at least EUR 100.01 including tax per store per day, for residents outside the EU. Singapore requires at least SGD 100 including GST, a minimum age of 16, and departure through Changi or Seletar with the goods.

Every RIMOWA size clears both minimums.

The US Looks Cheap, but the Price Excludes Tax

US web prices exclude sales tax, which is added at checkout by state and city. In New York City, at a combined 8.875%, the Cabin goes from THB 51,840 to about THB 56,441, THB 4,041 more than in Thailand.

Do You Pay Tax When You Bring It Back to Thailand?

Yes, it has to be declared. Goods bought abroad worth more than THB 20,000 in total go through the red channel, where import duty plus 7% VAT is charged. Even the smallest RIMOWA size is over that limit on its own.

The example rate Suvarnabhumi customs once gave for bags is 20% duty plus 7% VAT. At that rate, a French Cabin after its refund rises to about THB 48,289, still about THB 4,100 under the Thai price, while a Japanese Cabin rises to about THB 60,325, more than buying at home.

The duty rate is an example from 2018. Check the current tariff with Thai Customs before travelling. Figures calculated by the Luxe Addict team

The Luxe Addict Take on Where to Buy

If you are going to France anyway, it is the only country where a saving survives customs. In Japan and the US the gap is too small to cover import duty, and buying in Thailand means no red channel and no wait for a refund.

The case itself is the same everywhere. The RIMOWA Original is grooved anodised aluminium and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Which Size Should You Choose?

The Cabin, at 55 x 40 x 23 cm, is the carry-on. The Check-In L, at 79 x 51 x 27.5 cm, is for long trips, and the Trunk Plus, at 80 x 44 x 37 cm, is the deep case for people who pack a lot.

The bigger the case, the bigger the baht gap between countries, but import duty grows with the price too.
